開門炮仗
春節早晨，開門大吉，先放爆竹，叫做“開門炮仗”。爆竹聲後，碎紅滿地，燦若雲錦，稱為“滿堂紅”。這時滿街瑞氣，喜氣洋洋。
拜年
新年的初一，男人們都早早起來，後來一些上層人物和士大夫便使用名貼相互投賀，由此發展出後來的“賀年片”。春節拜年時，晚輩要先給長輩拜年，祝長輩人長壽安康，長輩可將事先準備好的壓歲錢分給晚輩，據說壓歲錢可以壓住邪祟，因為“歲”與“祟”諧音，晚輩得到壓歲錢就可以平平安安度過一歲。壓歲錢有兩種，一種是以彩繩穿線編作龍形，置於床腳，此記載見於《燕京歲時記》;另一種是最常見的.，即由家長用紅紙包裹分給孩子的錢。壓歲錢可在晚輩拜年後當眾賞給，亦可在除夕夜孩子睡著時，由家長偷偷地放在孩子的枕頭底下。
佔歲
舊時民間以進入新正初幾日的天氣陰晴來佔本年年成。其說始於漢東方朔的《歲佔》，謂歲後八日，一日為雞日，二日為犬，三日為豬，四日為羊，五日為牛，六日為馬，七日為人，八日為谷。如果當日晴朗，則所主之物繁育，當日陰，所主之日不昌。後代沿其習，認為初一至初十，皆以天氣清朗，無風無雪為吉。後代由佔歲發展成一系列的祭祀、慶祝活動。
飲屠蘇酒
屠蘇酒是一種藥酒。在古代習俗中，元日全家飲屠蘇酒，以祛不正之氣。製作屠蘇酒的方法是：用大黃一錢，桔梗，川椒各一錢五分，桂心一錢八分，茱萸一錢二分，防風一兩，以絳囊盛之懸於井中，至元日寅時取起，以酒煎四五沸。古時飲屠蘇酒，方法很別緻。一般人飲酒，總是從年長者飲起;但是飲屠蘇酒卻正好相反，是從最年少的飲起。大概年少者一天天長大，先飲酒以示祝賀，而年長者過一年少一年，後飲以示挽留。宋朝文學家蘇轍的《除日》詩道“年年最後飲屠蘇，不覺年來七十餘”，說的就是這種風俗。這種別開生面的飲酒次序，在古代每每令人產生種種感慨，所以給人留有深刻的印象。
