v.(動詞)

hope用作動詞的基本意思是“希望”“期望”,指熱切、專心致志地對未來的、積極的、崇高的、一些好的或有利的結果的盼望,含有一定的主觀性,相信其可能實現。

hope既可用作及物動詞,也可用作不及物動詞。用作及物動詞時,其後一般接動詞不定式或賓語從句,但不能接名詞、動名詞作賓語,也不能接複合賓語; 用作不及物動詞時,常與介詞for連用表示“對…抱有希望”。

hope接動詞不定式的完成體也是表達將來時間。

hope所接的that從句中的謂語多由will〔may〕+ v. 構成, that可省略。在對話中常可用so或not代替前面句子中肯定式或否定式的賓語(動詞不定式或that從句)。

hope作“希望”解,本身即指將來,所以在hope的賓語從句中常可用一般現在時表示將來時間,一般不與be going to連用。

hope不是轉移否定動詞,表示否定意義時,否定詞可放在主句中,也可放在從句中,但意義不同,用so或not代替時亦如此。注意can't but hope的意思是“只能希望”。

hope是靜態動詞,一般不用於進行體。如用於進行體,則強調當時的思想情況,或是表達一種強烈的願望,除具有“短暫性”外,語氣也較為婉轉。其過去進行體was hoping出現在句中有時並不表示過去的時間,而可能指現在的時間,這種用法比其現在進行體語氣更加委婉。

hope用於過去完成時可表示以前的希望或設想未曾實現,含有一種對希望幻滅的惋惜之情。

hope以動詞不定式或that從句作主語時可用於被動結構,但必須採用形式主語結構。

I shall hope to see you when we return to town.中的shall hope是個婉轉用語,它實際上是指現在的hope, to see you才指將來的行為。但英語不能說I hope to shall see you ... ,因此才把shall轉移到hope上。
