The following appeared in an announcement issued by the publisher of The Mercury, a weekly newspaper. Since a competing lower-priced newspaper, The Bugle, was started five years ago, The Mercurys circulation has declined by 10,000 readers. The best way to get more people to read The Mercury is to reduce its price below that of The Bugle, at least until circulation increases to former levels. The increased circulation of The Mercury will attract more businesses to buy advertising space in the paper。 Discuss how well reasoned . . . Etc。
The announcement concludes that the best option for increasing Mercurys circulation to former levels is to lower its price below that of its competitor, The Bugle. This conclusion is based on the fact that since The Bugle was introduced, circulation has declined substantially. This argument is not convincing as the author has made some questionable assumptions that may or may not be true, given the data provided. Firstly, the factors as to why the circulation has declined are unknown, this may not have been related to the introduction of the Bugle at a lower price. Furthermore price is not the only factor taken into consideration by readers when deciding which paper to buy. Finally, the goal of the Mercury is to attract more business to buy advertising space and increased circulation is not necessarily the best way to achieve this goal。

The tragic events of September 11, 20xx changed the world forever. But 11 years after the terrorist attacks, a number of strange byproducts of that day's events are coming to light.
For example, two independent studies have suggested that events directly connected to the 9/11 attacks had a positive effect on whales and a negative effect on unborn babies.
A second study in the emerging field of epigenetics suggested that many of the estimated 1,700 pregnant women in New York City at the time of the attacks may have potentially have passed heir Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) symptoms to their unborn children.
The study results, which were published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism, found that some of the children tested in the year after September 11, 20xx measured low-levels of cortisol, a trait commonly associated with PTSD.
諺語在英語中叫proverb,引用時經常會在其前面酌情加上old, Chinese, English, Russian之類的形容詞;動詞一般用go, say, state, has it, put it等,在這些動詞後面用逗號或冒號皆可。
(1) A proverb goes / says, ……
As a / the proverb goes / says, ……
A Yiddish proverb goes, “Better to lose with a wise man than win with a fool.”
A proverb says, “Medicine cures the man who is fated not to die.”
As a Chinese proverb goes, “Don’t climb a tree to look for fish.”
As the old Chinese proverb says, “If you do not enter a tiger’s den, you cannot get her cubs.”
(2) As a / the proverb has it / puts it,……
A proverb has it that ……
As a Spanish proverb has it, “Flies don’t enter a closed mouth.”
As a Navajo proverb puts it, “What comes around goes around.”
As a local proverb here in Chad puts it: A woman who is pregnant has one foot in the grave.
An old proverb has it that “if the thorn doesn't scratch when it first emerge, it will never scratch.”
(3) There is a proverb: ……
There is a / the proverb that goes / states, ……
There’s an African proverb: “Educate a boy, and educate an individual. Educate a girl, and you educate a community.” There’s a Russian proverb that goes: you must support the most talented people because untalented people will support themselves.
There is an old Jewish proverb that states: “A Shekel is always better in my pocket than in yours.”
(4) ……, a / the proverb goes, ……
……, goes a / the proverb, ……
“A river is deep,” an old African proverb goes, “because of its source.”
To kill a snake, goes an old African proverb, you must first crush the head.
(5) …… have a proverb that goes, ……
There exists a proverb. It goes, ……
The Arabs have a proverb that goes, “When the sultan’s dog died, everyone marched in his funeral. But when the sultan himself died, no one marched at all.”
As a Chinese proverb goes, a dog cannot change its habit of eating shit. A leopard cannot change its spots. 或者A fox may grow gray, but never good.

I was sad when you told me that you would go abroad. I'm going to lose a bosom friend.
When people say that I speak English fluently, I know, I owe the praise to you.
Do you remember that English class, when we were learning the text The Necklace? The teacher asked me to act Mathilde and you to act Jeanne. I was so nervous that my voice trembled, but you spoke so naturally and nicely. How I admired you! After class, you said to me:“Don't be afraid, and don't be shy. If you like English you must open your mouth.”I was deeply touched by these words.
Since then we spoke English whenever we met each other trying our best to express ourselves in English.
I'll never forget the Sunday when we saw the American film Turning Point. Though the actors and the actresses spoke very fast and I coudn't catch every word of the story, I got the main idea. Then we talked about the film for almost the whole day. It was, moreover, my turning point. From then on, I began to watch English on Sunday, to listen to Radio Beijing and began to pay more attention to English programs. We are both fond of American pop songs②. Sometimes we go to the movies, sometimes we go to the English Corner at the People's Park to practise our oral English.
Now, you are leaving me, but I'll never forget the happy days we have spent together. I'll never forget you. I hope you won't forget me and other classmates of yours. Above all, I hope you won't forget our motherland where you were born, and have been living. I hope you will study and work hard to achieve great achievements and then to render service to repay our country.
